The short answer: for most people with weak eyesight, the iPad 11-inch (A16) is the easiest choice. It has a bright 11-inch screen and Apple’s Larger Text, Zoom and Magnifier features (Apple). If you want the biggest screen without paying for a “Pro” tablet, look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE+ with its 13.1-inch screen. On a tighter budget, the Galaxy Tab A11+ (11-inch) is Samsung’s lower-cost option (Samsung). Whichever you buy, the text-size settings below make the biggest difference.

What matters most if your eyesight isn’t great

  • Screen size. More screen means bigger text without having to scroll sideways.
  • Brightness. A brighter screen is easier to read by a window or outdoors.
  • Text-size and zoom settings. Every tablet below lets you enlarge text well beyond the standard size.
  • Weight. A big tablet you can’t hold comfortably won’t get used.
  • Familiarity. Match your phone if you can (iPhone with iPad, Android with Android), so the settings and apps feel the same.

What about Amazon Fire tablets?

Amazon announced on October 8, 2026 that it’s ending its Fire tablet line. It replaced them with new Alexa Tablets (8, 11 and 12-inch) that run Android with the Google Play Store (CNBC, Amazon). They start at $229 for the 8-inch and $329 for the 11-inch, and began shipping October 14, 2026 (Amazon). They’re too new for us to recommend yet. If you already own a Fire tablet, it keeps working, and Amazon lists how long each model gets security updates (Amazon).

Make the text bigger on an iPad

  1. Open Settings, tap Accessibility, then Display & Text Size.
  2. Tap Larger Text, turn on Larger Accessibility Sizes, and drag the slider to a size you can read comfortably.
  3. Go back and turn on Bold Text. Increase Contrast can also help (Apple).

The Magnifier app turns the camera into a magnifying glass for menus, labels and pill bottles (Apple). For step-by-step pictures, see how to make text bigger on iPhone and Android. The settings are the same on iPad.

Make the text bigger on a Samsung tablet

  1. Open Settings and tap Display.
  2. Tap Font size and style and move the slider up.
  3. Tap Screen zoom to make everything on the screen larger, not just the text.
  4. For an even simpler layout, turn on Easy mode (under Display). It enlarges on-screen items, uses a high-contrast keyboard and helps prevent accidental taps (Samsung).

Samsung notes that the exact screens can vary by model and software version (Samsung).

Before you buy

  • Hold it in the store for a few minutes, the way you’d use it at home.
  • Ask the store to turn on the largest text size so you can see what you’ll actually be reading.
  • Buy a case with a stand so you’re not holding it all the time.
  • Set it up with a family member and save your passwords. See how to create a safe password you won’t forget.

Questions people ask about tablets for low vision

Is an iPad or an Android tablet better for bad eyesight?

Both have strong options. iPad has Larger Text, Bold Text, Zoom and Magnifier built in (Apple, Apple). Samsung tablets have Font size, Screen zoom and Easy mode (Samsung). If you already use an iPhone, an iPad will feel familiar. If you use an Android phone, a Samsung tablet will.

Is a bigger screen always better?

A bigger screen shows bigger text, but it’s heavier to hold. If you mostly read in a chair or at a table, a 13-inch screen is easier on the eyes. If you hold the tablet in bed or carry it around, an 11-inch model is lighter. Try both in a store if you can.

Do I need a tablet with cellular service?

No. Wi-Fi models work fine at home. The iPad and Galaxy Tab A11+ both come in Wi-Fi and cellular versions (Apple, Samsung).

Will my Amazon Fire tablet stop working?

No. Amazon has stopped making new Fire tablets, but existing ones keep working (CNBC). Amazon publishes the date until which each Fire model gets security updates (Amazon).
